The Yogyakarta Palace (Keraton): The Special Heart of the Student City

The Yogyakarta Palace (Keraton Yogyakarta) – Yogyakarta holds a unique and special status in Indonesia. This is largely because the city, often dubbed the “Student City,” is home to the Keraton Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat, the official seat of the Yogyakarta Sultanate.
Since Yogyakarta joined the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia in 1950, the Keraton has consistently been one of the most popular cultural destinations for tourists.
The Structure and Contents of the Keraton
The layout of the Yogyakarta Palace features a distinctive arrangement comprising several core complexes:
- Siti Hinggil Ler (Northern Audience Hall)
- Kamandhungan Ler (Northern Kamandhungan)
- Sri Manganti
- Kedhaton (The Palace Proper)
- Kamagangan
- Kamandhungan Kidul (Southern Kamandhungan)
- Siti Hinggil Kidul (Southern Audience Hall)
Within the Keraton complex, various historical artifacts justify by the Sultanate are preserved. This collection includes the uniforms of the abdi dalem (palace servants) and dioramas illustrating the important ceremonies frequently held by the Yogyakarta Sultanate.
Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site
Thanks to its extraordinary historical and cultural value, UNESCO has officially designated the Keraton Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat as a World Heritage Site. This recognition covers both the tangible (physical objects) and intangible (traditions and ceremonies) heritage of the palace.
